In the morning we visited a pioneer town that contained several buildings that were salvaged from early Fairbanks and moved to a common site.

Eldorado Gold Mine
To access the gold mine, we traveled on a train that was a replica of those used originally in this area. This is Earl Hughes - the train conductor and entertainer. He told us about the mine and sang several songs including "North to Alaska"

Drag Line
This is a drag line that was powered by steam to move the gold from the mine (and it still works)

Sluicing for Gold
This is the Sourdough that explained how a sluice works to separate the rocks from the gold. Once it is separated, it can be panned to find the nuggets.

Gold dust
If you look closely, you can see the gold dust found after running the ore through the sluice.

Trying our luck at panning
We panned for our own gold after being shown how to do it. We can say it was harder than it looked.

Gold Nugget
No Nancy didn't find this nugget, but they said it was worth more than $60,000.

More Alaska Pipeline
On the way back from the gold mine, we saw the Alaska Pipeline and a visitor center that explained how it was built and how it was maintained.
